This is a beautiful part of the world with a satisfyingly different lifestyle from the metropolitan centres. The main settlement in this GP practice is Walls – a picturesque village with houses built along the shores of the voe, or sea inlet. There are fantastic walks, with lovely beaches, enabling you to see our famous Shetland Ponies and local wildlife, which includes otters and seals.

The Walls practice has 701 patients and covers the islands of Foula and Papa Stour, along with the village of Sandness (10 minutes drive from Walls). Patients from Sandness travel to Walls to see the GP and as part of the service we provide, the GP will fly from Tingwall airport into Foula every 6-8 weeks (weather permitting). There is a resident nurse on Foula. Patients from the island of Papa Stour come to the surgery via a daily ferry service. The Walls practice is currently open 4 days a week, with cover being provided from a neighbouring practice on Thursdays
The Westside is also very much a crofting area, though for the most part nowadays it’s done on a part-time basis, with main employment coming from elsewhere, involving travel to the main town of Lerwick or the oil terminal at Sullom Voe. However, there several local businesses which give employment in the area, mainly mussel and salmon farms, bakery, swimming pool, Care Centre etc. There is a very good leisure centre nearby in the village of Aith, which has a swimming pool, sauna, fitness suite and badminton/football courts. The local Community Council has prepared a briefing for applicants, which will be sent as part of the application pack. For more info on the Westside, plus photos, go to

NHS Shetland is the most northerly Health Service in the country and a unique setting in which to develop your career. We are a tight-knit organisation with approximately 700 staff looking after the health needs of some 23,000 people spread across 15 islands. We follow a highly professional ethos that characterises every aspect of our operations. All in all you’ll find a superb degree of professionalism allied to a practical, resolute approach to the challenges of working in a remote island setting.

We are open to discussion regarding different models for delivering care, so if you are interested in working part time or want to develop a portfolio career incorporating other roles elsewhere, please get in touch. If you would like to discuss taking on this practice as an independent practice, we would be happy to have that conversation with you. Successful candidates will have the option to develop specialist interests e.g. paediatrics, obstetrics, dermatology etc should this be of interest. Several of our GPs have worked with Promote Shetland to develop short video clips detailing what it is like to live and work in Shetland and you can access the clips here:

For an informal discussion please contact Lisa Watt, Service Manager, Primary Care on 01595 743209 (email ). The closing date for applications is 30th November 2017.
