As an Advanced Nurse Practitioner you will see individuals with undifferentiated and undiagnosed problems. Based on patient history, clinical assessment and a comprehensive physical examination, utilising expert knowledge and clinical judgement, you will be able to identify the potential diagnosis. You will be able to initiate laboratory and radiological investigations, make referrals, prescribe and evaluate treatments appropriate to the clinical situation and needs of the patient. You will also be able to assess, plan and implement programmes of care, in liaison with multidisciplinary colleagues, to support the individual to remain at home with appropriate supportive measures thus avoiding unnecessary hospital admissions.
As an experienced nurse with Registration on Part 1 of the NMC Register, you will also possess extensive post registration experience working in Adult/Older People’s care and either possess a Nurse Practitioner Qualification or be expected to have completed / working towards a Masters degree in Advanced Practice which incorporates a programme of Advanced Clinical Examination Skills. Candidates are also expected to possess an Extended Independent (non medical) Prescribing qualification or be willing to undertake this programme of study. Evidence of ongoing professional development is essential. You will also be expected to be competent in a range of clinical skills to support the provision of nursing care in the home environment, including the ability to manage palliative care. Good communication, interpersonal and computer skills, together with an awareness of community legislation are essential. A full driving license is also required.
This post will be based on the non-doctor island of Bressay and the postholder will also be expected to hold a caseload, with continuing responsibility for the assessment of care needs and development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care within that specific caseload, which is responsive to both the ongoing health needs of the resident population, circa 380 individuals, as well as to provide an emergency response in the out of hours periods (overnight and at weekends) for which an oncall allowance is paid. The post holder acts as first point of contact for the public in the absence of a resident medical practitioner. There is NHS Board accommodation on the island of Bressay which is available to rent in order to support the provision of a residential service. This is an exciting time to join the staff of NHS Shetland, where we are increasing our number of Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) posts across the service to support the ongoing development of a range of patient services. Appropriate support and supervision arrangements are in place from senior colleagues and designated General Practitioners (GP’s).
